    Sputnik 4

    NSSDC/COSPAR ID: 1960-005A

    Description

This spacecraft, the first of a series of spacecraft used to investigate the means for manned space flight, contained scientific instruments, a television system, and a self-sustaining biological cabin with a dummy of a man. The spacecraft was designed to study the operation of the life support system and the stresses of flight. The spacecraft radioed both extensive telemetry and prerecorded voice communications. After four days of flight, the reentry cabin was separated from its service module and retrorockets were fired, but because of an incorrect attitude the spacecraft did not reenter the atmosphere.

Propping up Assad | Opinion , Editorial | THE DAILY STAR

Summary

In contrast, Russia and Iran have mounted a fierce verbal resistance to the same scenario in Syria, not out of concern for the Syrian people, but because their only goal is to see the West recognize Syrian President Bashar Assad as a "partner" in the fight against ISIS.

The only certainty is that if international law and national sovereignty are violated in Syria in such a way that serves the interest of Moscow and Tehran, they will waste no time applauding the effort, even if it means more suffering for the Syrian people.

Remembering the 'Lion of Panjshir'
Ahmad Shah Massoud, who brazenly fought the Soviet Red Army and Taliban, is now regarded as a national hero by Afghans.
 Last Modified: 09 Sep 2012 16:28

Kabul, Afghanistan - A week-long commemoration is underway in Afghanistan marking the life of Ahmad Shah Massoud, the Tajik guerrilla leader who led a poorly equipped force that helped humble a superpower.

Known as the "Lion of Panjshir" due to his fierce resistance to Soviet attacks, Massoud was killed 11 years ago on September 9 by al-Qaeda assassins posing as journalists.

In his mid-20s when Red Army marched into Afghanistan, Massoud organised resistance from the northern Panjshir Valley, and relentlessly attacked the Soviets' vital supply line along the Salang Pass.

He quickly became a thorn in the Russians' side, and they retaliated with large-scale offensives. But his outnumbered and outgunned fighters repeatedly repulsed the onslaughts.

After helping defeat the Soviets, Massoud fought against the Taliban and al-Qaeda as the leader of the Northern Alliance, cementing his reputation as a deft military strategist.

Today, his image inundates the Afghan capital: A billboard atop a mountain overlooks Kabul, in a square at one of its busiest intersections, and a giant portrait graces the exterior of Kabul airport's arrivals terminal. Countless Massoud photographs are found in the cars, homes and businesses of the city's residents.

President Hamid Karzai has deemed Massoud a "national hero of Afghanistan", and the anniversary of his death has become known as "Martyr's Week".

Omar Samad, an Afghanistan expert at the US Institute of Peace, said the pervasiveness of Massoud's image is in contradiction to the humility he exhibited in life.

"Ironically, as a modest person ... he did not like to be called a 'hero' or even have his pictures displayed," Samad told Al Jazeera.

Not a saint

Massoud's heroic status, however, is as much a government orchestration as it is popular sentiment, and rivals challenge his reputation as Afghanistan's best-known mujahidin fighter.

He has served as President since 2000, when he succeeded his father, Hafez al-Assad, who led Syria for 30 years until his death.
Assad graduated from the medical school of Damascus University in 1988, and started to work as a physician in the army. Four years later, he attended postgraduate studies at the Western Eye Hospital, in London, specializing inophthalmology. In 1994, after his elder brother Bassel was killed in a car crash, Bashar was recalled to Syria to take over Bassel's role as heir apparent. He entered the military academy, taking charge of the Syrian occupation of Lebanon in 1998. In December 2000, Assad married Asma Assad, née Akhras. Assad was reconfirmed by the national electorate as President of Syria in 2000 and 2007, after the People's Council of Syria had voted to propose the incumbent uncontested each time.[1][2] The Assad government has described itself as secular,[3] while experts have contended that the government exploits sectarian tensions in the country to remain in power.[4]
Initially seen by the domestic and international community as a potential reformer,[5] this expectation ceased when he allegedly ordered mass crackdowns and military sieges on Arab Spring protesters, leading to the Syrian Civil War. TheSyrian opposition, the United StatesCanada, the European Union and the majority of the Arab League have subsequently called for al-Assad's resignation from the presidency.[6][7] During the Syrian Civil War, Assad was personally implicated in war crimes and crimes against humanity by the United Nations,[8] and was the top of a list of individuals indicted for the greatest responsibility in war crimes for prosecution by the International Criminal Court.[9] In late April 2014, Assad announced he would run for a third term in Syria's first multi-candidate presidential election in decades, amid serious concerns by the European Union, the United States and other countries regarding the legitimacy of this vote and the effect it will have on peace talks with the Syrian Opposition.[10][11] He was sworn in for his third seven-year term, on July 16, 2014, in the presidential palace in Damascus.[12]

The Amarna Period The Amarna period of Egyptian history began during the reign of the pharaoh Amenhotep III nearly 3,400 years ago. This was a period of tremendous artistic and architectural achievement. The famous Colossi of Memnon were built, wonderful additions were made to the temples at Luxor and Karnak, and seeds were sown for a monotheistic religion. Upon the death of Amenhotep III, his son Amenhotep IV became pharaon of Egypt. This "heretic king" changed his name to Akhenaten, quickly abandoned the pantheon of Egyptian gods and declared the sun-god, Aten, to be the only god. He and his queen, Nefertiti, built a new city, known as Akhetaten (Horizon of the Aten) at the present site of Tell el-Amarna. From there he ruled all Egypt and directed the worship of his one god, Aten. Following the death of Akhenaten, Tutankhamun (who was born Tutankh-aten, and is believed by a great many Egyptologists to have been Akhenaten's son), returned the religious capital of Egypt to Thebes. The monuments of the "heretic king" were destroyed and the memory of his reign was erased. But the eighteen year reign of Akhenaten had touched upon a religious philosophy and an artistic style that still echoes today. Aten Lord of Heaven, Lord of Earth.

Aten

Lord of Heaven, Lord of Earth.
Cult Center: At Tell el-Amarna in the city of Akhetaten (the horizon of Aten)
Attributes: The Aten gained its prominence during the reign of Akhenaten. The heretic king made an effort it seems, to unite all the peoples of Egypt under one god. He abolished the traditional cults of Egypt and replaced them with the Aten. Unfortunately for Akhenaten, the Egyptians did not wish to be united in this fashion. The king considered the Aten to be the creative force in the universe and the only god worthy of his worship.
Representation: Inscriptions state that the god had no physical image, but it was represented as a solar disk projecting many downward rays that ended as human hands. Sometimes holding ankhs, the symbol of eternal life.

on Emerald Tablets. AS IS ABOVE, SO IS BELOW This saying, attributed to Thoth

AS IS ABOVE, SO IS BELOW
This saying, attributed to Thoth as being the most fundamental truth of our conscious minds, is the basis of the outer Hermetic teaching. The idea is that the world is a mirror of heaven — a reflection. The divine patterns found here are a reflection of those in the worlds above. Everything that is understandable here has meaning because its pattern is represented in the divine. That's the inner foundation of language and writing in the purely symbolic sense. That is just what Thoth created — an inner connection between the divine light patterns and the outer forms it takes. This conscious connection doesn't come easily, in fact it must be accompanied by skills for accepting deep abstraction. We may call it a "new idea" or "concept", but it's the ability to visualize patterns in the light and realize the meaning in life. We take for granted how much of this ability we have inherited from the ancient past.
Mystically, Thoth realized the great 'Scroll of Light', and began to inscribe upon it the glyphs of his world — his language of truth. So powerful was the resonance of this language that it could be understood by those who heard him speak, and stood in his presence. Thoth could draw pictures of these ideas so clearly that they brought up expansive images in the minds of his comrades — they could "read" these pictures as reminders of what he had said to them. They were learning to travel in his space of truth, learning his "language" defined by his work as a mystic light traveler. The same is true today. We call it memory. It is a shared experience of inner light.
On the plane of light the mnemonic glyphs of language appear as standing resonators of meaning. By traveling through these energetic monoliths you come to know the meaning of language and its purpose in the history of consciousness. This constellation of micro-portals dots the dimensional landscape like the scroll of a player piano — the scroll of Thoth. As you travel along the surface you replay the information that is stored in the Halls of Amenti. There you find the emerald tablet of Hermes Trismegistus. It is cut from pure Beryl stone of radiant mind-glass.
If you find this stone, and decipher it,
you will see that it is a map of the
hallways underneath the earth.
The hallways branch in every direction,
but twelve are the most prominent.
It is said that if you follow each hallway
to its end, you will find another emerald tablet,
making thirteen in all.
Decipher all the tablets,
learn the lessons they contain,
and Thoth will personally appear to greet you!

Ma'at and Thoth!
Two teachers from the heart of Atlantis.
